Wondering what to do?

Myriad things to do, whatever the weather

The first things to do at Chirnside Hall are eat, drink and relax. But given our superb location in the Scottish Borders, it’s a shame not to step outside.

Our shoot is renowned, with many guns returning year after year. We can also arrange shooting days for novices or beginners. The nearby River Tweed is famous worldwide for fly-fishing, and we can help you arrange fly-fishing expeditions or lessons with a local guide. They can lend you waders, rods and other kit, as well as offering expert advice and tuition.

Our own estate has wonderful walks – as vigorous or leisurely as you like. You’re likely to see plenty of wildlife – birds of prey, deer, hares and maybe even the elusive otter, according to the season. If you’re a keen wildlife photographer, we could help organise a ‘photo-stalking’ day.

Further afield, there is excellent hill-walking in the Lammermuirs and Cheviots, and glorious coastal walks around St Abbs and Eyemouth.

The Borders also offer a splendid choice of culture and heritage. You can visit distinctive country houses and mansions like Manderston House, Paxton House, Floors Castle and Sir Walter Scott’s Abbotsford, or you could tour the famous Borders Abbeys. We’re close enough to Edinburgh for you to throw yourself into a few days of comedy, theatre and music during the Edinburgh Festivals, or you could head south to the famous Sage Gateshead arts centre. There’s also the annual Borders Book Festival closer to hand.

Sports fanatics have a dazzling choice of golf courses around the Borders and the Lothians, Or if you prefer watching sport to playing it, you could go to a rugby international at Murrayfield, a cricket match at Durham, or SPL or Premier League football at Edinburgh or Newcastle. You can also learn about local motor-racing ace Jim Clark at nearby Duns.

Come rain or shine, there’s plenty to do around Chirnside Hall, and if the sun isn't shining we can lend you some waterproofs or an umbrella if that would help you enjoy our wonderful surroundings. And after all that fresh air or culture? Back to an open fire, some first-class food and drink, and a luxurious bedroom.
